A major expansion to this continuing care retirement community provided the
opportunity to create a courtyard for individuals experiencing dementia. A
wandering path, way-finding elements, shading devices, water, sculpture,
seating, and plants selected for seasonal interest help to create an inviting
and comfortable outdoor space. The wandering path in this therapeutic garden
slopes down gradually at the far end of the courtyard to create a raised
planting bed with sensory plant material. A vine-covered pergola adjacent to
the sensory bed creates a shady retreat.
