THE ALOIS ALZHEIMERS CENTER
Cincinnati, OH
Restorative or healing gardens have been a part of myth and tradition for
hundreds of years. For the individual with dementia, these gardens are of
particular importance. Contact with nature and the outdoor environment provides
a calming effect, helping individuals deal with the stress and frustration of
physical and mental challenges. Three healing gardens, addressing each of the
different stages of the disease, were designed by Beckwith Chapman Associates
for the Center. Included are wandering paths, way-finding elements, shade,
water elements and non-injurious plant material. These therapeutic gardens
offer peace, tranquility and the opportunity for a spiritual restoration that
only nature can provide.
