The large, wide deck on the rear of this residence ran the entire length of the
house, making the lower level dark. The owners desired an exterior space for
entertaining at both levels, which would compliment the architecture of the
house and connect it to the garden below. The solution by Beckwith Chapman
Associates was to scale back the deck, creating two separate balconies allowing
light to penetrate through to the lower level of the house. A brick terrace was
created at the lower level and the yard was terraced with a series of stone
retaining walls. An entry pergola was created to greet visitors from the
driveway. Lighting accentuates the detailing of the balconies and pergola.
